Understanding cellulite
Cellulite describes dimpled or uneven-looking skin, often around the thighs and buttocks. Mayo Clinic describes it as a common, harmless skin condition. Choosing whether to explore cosmetic treatment is a personal decision.
If you are concerned about skin texture, a consultation can help you understand the options, their limitations and whether a proposed treatment is suitable for you. Focus on the cosmetic change you would like to explore rather than expecting broader health benefits.
Cellulite and fat reduction are different
The American Academy of Dermatology explains that reducing fat and treating cellulite address different concerns. A procedure that removes fat may not improve cellulite. A treatment described as body contouring or skin tightening may have a different goal from one intended to address dimpling.
Ask the provider to explain which concern a proposed treatment targets and what evidence supports its use. This helps you compare an option with the specific change you hope to see.

Set realistic expectations
The American Academy of Dermatology’s review describes different levels of evidence for cellulite treatments, with some options offering limited or temporary improvements. Ask how much change might be expected from the specific treatment being proposed, how long it may last and whether maintenance appointments would be needed.
Before-and-after photographs can help a provider explain an option. Ask how those examples relate to your skin concern and how progress would be assessed.
Questions to ask at a consultation
- Is my main concern dimpling, loose skin, body contour or a combination?
- Which treatment or device would be proposed, and does it specifically address cellulite?
- What evidence supports the treatment, and what are its limitations?
- What side effects, risks or reasons to postpone treatment should I understand?
- How many appointments might be needed, what would they cost and would ongoing maintenance be recommended?
- Who performs the treatment, and what preparation and aftercare would I need?
